Didi - the Stereotypical Barbie Cat

What’s Happening?

We Are currently snowed in. This happens about twice a decade here, and it’s a big one. Temperatures will not get to melting levels for days, and everything is white. Will be sprinkling seed for birds and slogging out to fill their feeders… they appear frantic. Worried about out feral cats. I’m going to clear off our porch, where they eat, but I’m not sure they can get there yet. Sadly, this area is simply not built to handle winter weather.

Writing. I have fewer than 100 pages left to edit on Coyne House and expect to finish in the next few days. Maybe sooner, but I have 300 plus authors to pay, and I like to do that on time. I’ve mentioned this, but it bears repeating, I think. You can read the first edit and offer comments, thoughts, etc. by e-mailing me and asking. I have set up a private “role” on my website for early readers, and I’m happy to add more of you to the group. This is a very complex novel and the possibility of missing something important is a real concern. Also, so far, readers are loving it. This is the book with as many horror tropes as I could shoehorn in. Not a small number.

I have sent partials to my agent and will be deciding between two books which one to tackle next. One is a werewolf novel inspired by my short story of the same title, A Taste of Blood & Roses, and the other is project I’ve mentioned before, Into Nothing, which also includes an earlier story, music, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and… well, more on that later. That one has more words, but the agent thinks she can sell a werewolf novel quickly. The werewolf book would be quicker and easier to finish. Into Nothing has 25k words already, and A Taste of Blood and Roses has three chapters I wrote over a decade ago that will need to be redone.

I have short fiction upcoming in the anthology Dirty Deeds, Done Dirt Cheap: a literary tribute to Revenge, and a story – “Found Souls,” that I wrote with my daughter Katie (Kat) to answer a long-standing question about something in Billy Martin (Poppy Z. Brite)’s novel Lost Souls. The anthology is a tribute to Billy and his work, so thrilled to be part of that. I have a novella due sometime this coming year, and a couple of stories out that are part of things not yet announced. Starting to build my way back.

Hopeful project to be completed this year include an anthology of Old Mill Stories that have been published in various anthologies, including Cletus J. Diggs, Donovan DeChance, and others. Even Titus Cros makes an appearance, by permission of the late Brian Lumley. I also expect to complete my first poetry collection.

I have a limited number of copies of Hickory Nuts & Bones – my newest collection that almost no one has read that came out from Lefthand Path Press on Halloween. For $15 plus shipping I will sign and send copies while they last. For an extra $5 I’ll remarque your copy with a drawing – getting “okay” at drawing again…

What I’m Reading

I’ve gotten a solid reading start for the year, despite how depressing and crazy it’s been. Currently on Kindle I am reading Midwestern Gothic by Scott Thomas, and Lord Byron: Selected Poems that I am reading my Scribe so I can take notes.

Completed this year with reviews, links to Goodreads in the titles:

On Cats: An Anthology – edited by Margaret Atwood

What I’m Listening To

The Paleontologist – written by Luke Dumas and narrated by Graham Halstead

What I’m Watching

We have watched a lot of movies and shows since I last posted a newsletter. We loved A Complete Unknown, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, Enjoyed Battle After Battle, and The Wrecking Crew, which was exactly what we expected it to be. The Best You Can with Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgewick was perfect. We are keeping up with all the series shows and rushing through the last of Franklin and Bash since it’s leaving Netflix soon. This year I vow to keep a record of what we watch more carefully – but we are ALWAYS watching.
